剧情简介

　　冉阿让（哈里·博尔 Harry Baur 饰）因为行窃而被投入了监牢，面临着长达19年的牢狱之灾和沉重的体力劳动。最终，忍无可忍的冉阿让选择了越狱，看守沙威（查尔斯·文恩 Charles Vanel 饰）十分愤怒，发誓无论追随到天涯海角，也一定要将冉阿让再度捉拿归案。重获自由后的冉阿让改名换姓洗心革面，在牧师的感化之下过上了全新的生活。一天，他遇见了快要死去的女工芳汀（弗洛雷勒 Florelle 饰），临死之前，芳汀将自己年幼的女儿珂赛特（若斯利娜·加埃勒 Josseline Gaël 饰）托付给了冉阿让。与此同时，沙威也识破了冉阿让的身份。带着珂赛特一起，冉阿让父女两人过着东躲西藏的日子，一天，珂赛特结识了热血青年马里尤斯（吉恩·塞维斯 Jean Servais 饰），两人坠入了情网。
